WELCOME To The Western Community Centre Website
The Western Community Association strives to create opportunities and provide support that enhances the holistic well-being of the people in our community. The Western Community Centre offers a diverse range of services, programmes, workers and opportunities for individuals or groups of varying ages and backgrounds to come together to build community capacity. The purpose built Centre premise is a gathering place and “hub” for the West Hamilton community. As such, we are often a point of contact for community members as well as external agencies when key strategies are proposed within our membership boundaries. Building relationships across the boundaries of culture, race, family background and economic status are critical to forging a community that works. “These personal connections often encourage people to participate in projects, and to work collaboratively on issues that affect the well-being of the community. When a community of people are able to work in collaboration with each other, bridges may be built between the population concerned, thus providing a more empowered and cohesive society, the benefits often reflecting a marked improvement in the social, economic and health aspects of those concerned (Dorfman & Lane 1997)”.
WCC take an Asset Based Community Development approach, based on the principles of appreciating and mobilising citizen’s talents, skills and assets within our community through empowerment and ownership of the development process rather than simply as participants in these flagship projects mooted in our area.
Western Community News, a bi-monthly community newspaper delivered to 16,500 homes in the West Hamilton area, regularly profiles local community members & groups, focusing on sharing stories of the community’s success, thereby strengthening people’s confidence in their own capacities to inspire action, participation and positive development. WCC aims for a participatory approach to community development which is based on principles of empowerment and ownership of the development process. Community forums are held quarterly at the Centre and provide an opportunity for the community to come together to discuss and debate issues of importance pertaining to the benefit of the communities they live in.
